Girdwood's Popular Annual Events
Girdwood has a few very popular annual events that really define the character of Girdwood residents. The main events include the New Year's Eve Torchlight Parade and Fireworks, The Girdwood Annual Forest Fair, and Alyeska's Annual Slush Cup.
New Year's Eve Torchlight Parade and FireworksThe most celebrated holiday in Girdwood is New Year's Eve. The town has a "party hard" reputation that is certainly apparent on this day. The celebration starts with a Torchlight Parade where skiers and snowboarders of all ages parade down the mountain in the dark holding bamboo sticks lit with a red flame. The parade is followed by a fireworks display that unofficially signifies the start of a fun night to come.

The Annual Girdwood Forest FairThe Forest Fair is Girdwood's fair that is literally held in the woods of Girdwood. The fair features local musicians and artwork. There are many exotic food booths, crafts, activities for kids, and of course, a popular beer garden. The fair has a very "hippy" culture to it where people often dress up in flower headbands and tie dye.

Mac described this video perfectly in his interview when he said, "I’ve been to the Forest Fair like… four times in my life. It’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen [...]Like all the girls there were like swaying to the music and dancing like nobody was looking at them. I’m pretty sure so many people there were so high.”

Alyeska's Annual Slush CupThe main attraction of Alyeska's Spring Carnival, the Slush Cup spotlights Girdwood's fearless skiers and snowboarders in a competition. All the participants dress up in costumes and attempt to cross a long pool of ice cold water. The event is complete with booths, food, and a hilarious commentator. What makes the event especially fun is watching all the contestants tumble violently when they fall into the ice cold pool.
