Some Girdwoodian Lingo
Naturally, when there's a small isolated town, new terminology starts to form. Here are some of the common coinages and abbreviations Girdwood residents use.
The Sitz - Short for the Sitzmark, a popular bar and restaurant right off the mountain. The Sitzmark is a popular source of entertainment. They often host many local bands and musicians.

Pow - Abbreviation of "powder" as in a collection of loose snow that makes ideal conditions for skiing
Pillow - a mound of "powder"; a mound of loose snow Backcountry - Off the main trails of the mountain, usually not accessible from the ski lift. Side country - Off the main trails of the mountain, accessible from the ski lift. Aly - Abbreviation for Alyeska, the town's ski resort Lifty -According to Will from his interview, a Lifty is a "Ski operator". Granola - a stereotype of a person who is enviornmentally aware, usually dresses a particular way and has a very enviornmentally friendly lifestyle. There are other stereotypes commonly referred to in Girdwood including, "hippies", "potheads", and "yippies". |
